Jahana Hayes, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 5th district since 2019, recently took to social media to address concerns over proposed budget cuts affecting vital social programs. Hayes, who succeeded Elizabeth Esty in her congressional role, is known for her advocacy on issues impacting families and vulnerable populations.
On May 13, 2025, Hayes expressed concern over the rising cost of childcare and its impact on financially strained families. She announced her collaboration with 43 colleagues in the Democratic Women’s Caucus to urge House Republicans to reject proposed cuts to SNAP and Medicaid in favor of tax breaks for wealthy individuals. “The cost of childcare is skyrocketing & families are already under immense financial strain.”
Later that evening, Hayes highlighted the beginning of a critical markup session by the House Agriculture Committee regarding a Republican reconciliation bill proposing $313 billion in cuts to SNAP. Despite anticipating a lengthy session into the night, she affirmed her commitment to advocating for those affected by hunger and poverty. “Tonight, the House Agriculture Committee will begin to markup the Republican reconciliation bill that proposes $313B in cuts to SNAP.”
In an early morning update on May 14, Hayes criticized Republicans for their lack of defense regarding the proposed cuts during initial discussions. She noted that many committee members had left while Democrats continued their efforts against imposing work requirements on vulnerable Americans. “Republicans can’t even defend their cruel & partisan cuts to SNAP.”
Born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1973 and currently residing in Wolcott, Jahana Hayes graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005.
