Jahana Hayes, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Connecticut’s 5th district since 2019, recently took to social media to express her concerns about the proposed cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The congresswoman has been vocal about her opposition to these budgetary measures, which she perceives as harmful and unjust.
In a tweet dated May 22, 2025, Hayes stated, “While you were sleeping I was on the floor at 2am pushing back against harmful cuts to SNAP. Republicans sent a clear message with their budget: They don’t want to feed kids at home, and they don’t want to feed kids at school. This, and every other provision is cruel.” Her comments highlight her late-night efforts in Congress to counteract what she describes as damaging reductions in food assistance.
Later that day, on May 22, 2025, Hayes further elaborated on the potential impacts of reducing SNAP benefits. She tweeted, “Slashing programs like SNAP rips away the safety net families rely on when they fall on hard times. Here is what our Congresswoman has been doing to fight back against Republican plans to strip food from 42M Americans.” Through this post, she provided insight into her ongoing actions against these legislative changes affecting millions of Americans.
Continuing her critique of the GOP’s fiscal strategies on May 22, 2025, Hayes shared another post stating succinctly that “This is how the GOP budget will pay for the billionaire tax cuts.” This comment reflects her perspective that budget adjustments are designed primarily for tax reductions benefiting wealthy individuals.
Jahana Hayes was born in Waterbury and currently resides in Wolcott. A graduate of Southern Connecticut State University with a BA obtained in 2005, she succeeded Elizabeth Esty in representing Connecticut’s district since entering Congress.
