Jahana Hayes, U.S. Congresswoman representing Connecticut’s 5th district since 2019, recently addressed a range of community issues in a series of posts on her social media account.

On August 23, Hayes alerted residents to public health concerns regarding mosquito-borne illness in the state. She wrote, “Mosquitoes in 20+ CT towns & cities have tested positive for West Nile virus so far this year. Stay safe with these helpful tips: Drain stagnant water Avoid the outdoors during dusk & dawn Wear longsleeves & pants while outdoors Use insect repellent” (August 23, 2025).

The following day, she commented on economic issues related to federal policy and its impact on food prices. On August 24, she posted, “Trump tariffs have increased wholesale vegetable prices by nearly 40%, the largest jump on record.”

Addressing education as schools reopened for a new academic year, Hayes posted encouragement for students and educators across her district. On August 25, she stated, “A new school year brings new opportunities As students & educators return to classrooms across #CT05 for a year of curiosity & growth, I will keep working to ensure high quality education is attainable for all communities. Put your thinking caps on and have a great school”.

Hayes was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1973 and currently resides in Wolcott. She earned her BA from Southern Connecticut State University in 2005 before beginning her congressional career by succeeding Elizabeth Esty.
