Jahana Hayes, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 5th district since 2019, recently shared her thoughts on education and public service through a series of tweets. Hayes, who has been an advocate for educational issues and public service workers, highlighted various concerns via her social media platform.
On March 20, 2025, Hayes expressed her views on the casualness with which education is often discussed. She pointed out an error in spelling “Department” as a reflection of this attitude. “The level of casualness used when describing the education that other people’s children receive. Also- you spelled Department wrong…..I learned that in public school!”
The following day, March 21, 2025, she addressed the impact of certain policies on retirement benefits for public service workers. In her tweet, she emphasized how the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO) have reduced retirement benefits for teachers, police officers, and firefighters. She acknowledged the #SocialSecurityFairnessAct as a measure to rectify these reductions for over 28,000 beneficiaries in Connecticut. “The WEP & GPO slashed the retirement benefits of teachers, police officers, & firefighters – penalizing them for their public service. Thanks to the #SocialSecurityFairnessAct, more than 28,000 CT beneficiaries will finally see their fully earned benefits.”
Later that morning at around 11 AM Eastern Time on March 21st, Hayes announced her appearance on MSNBC with José DÃaz-Balart to discuss potential consequences resulting from an Executive Order aimed at closing down the Department of Education. “THIS MORNING: I will be live with @JDBalartMSNBC during the 11AM hour to highlight the fallout our children will see from the Executive Order to shutter the Department of Education.”
