Jahana Hayes, U.S. Congresswoman representing Connecticut’s 5th district since 2019, recently used her social media platform to highlight a series of advocacy and policy actions involving health care, education, and agricultural issues.

On August 21, 2025, Hayes shared that “Advocates from the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Disease visited us in Waterbury to discuss obstacles facing individuals impacted by disabling conditions & painful chronic illness. These perspectives are vital in crafting legislation that creates more equitable, inclusive &”. The post referenced ongoing discussions with advocates about the challenges faced by those living with rare diseases and chronic illnesses.

The following day, on August 22, Hayes addressed a recent legal decision regarding employment at the Department of Education. She wrote, “In April, I demanded the Dept. of Education reverse its decision to fire hundreds of employees from the Office of Civil Rights. A federal judge agreed and ordered staff be reinstated. The Dept. of Education must rehire more than 260 staffers. This is a win for students &”. The statement highlighted her involvement in efforts to prevent job cuts at the Office of Civil Rights and celebrated a judicial order mandating the rehiring of over 260 employees.

Later that same day, Hayes commented on agricultural policy by stating: “I joined my colleagues in leading a letter to the USDA to voice our strong opposition to their reorganization plan. New England families and farmers deserve better, and we are fighting to protect our communities.” This message reflected her opposition to proposed changes within the U.S. Department of Agriculture that she argued could negatively impact local families and farmers.

Hayes was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1973 and currently resides in Wolcott. She graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor’s degree in 2005 before entering public service.
