Hayes, who has been serving in Congress since 2019, took to social media to discuss the potential dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education and its implications for public education.
On February 7, 2025, Hayes announced her appearance on MSNBC at 8:15 pm to discuss efforts to dismantle the Department of Education. She also mentioned how private security had locked members of Congress out and emphasized her commitment to protecting public education. “Tonight at 8:15pm, I’ll be on @MSNBC to talk about efforts to dismantle @usedgov, how the private security locked members of Congress out, and what I’m doing to protect public education.”
The following day, February 8, Hayes reiterated her stance on the importance of the Department of Education for public schools across the nation. She highlighted that without this department, 49 million students attending public schools would suffer and reaffirmed her dedication to safeguarding public education. “As a teacher, I know how important @usedgov is to public education across the country… Our children deserve better, & I am committed to protecting public education.”
Later that day, Hayes held a town hall meeting in Cheshire where she encountered significant emotions from constituents expressing their frustration with federal government actions.
