Jahana Hayes, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Connecticut’s 5th district since 2019, has used her social media platform in recent days to voice concerns over federal nutrition programs and legislative actions affecting vulnerable populations.
On April 28, Hayes highlighted advocacy efforts at the Capitol: “Food Research & Action Center is at the Capitol advocating for the protection of nutrition programs in the Farm Bill. Like me they believe federal policy can and should work to address poverty related hunger in the U.S. Strengthening federal nutrition programs can provide”.
The following day, she addressed a Supreme Court decision, posting on April 29: “I stood with @TheBlackCaucus to denounce the decision handed down by the Supreme Court in the Louisiana v. Callais case.
On April 30, Hayes criticized provisions within a new Farm Bill during late-night House proceedings: “I’m on the House floor at 11pm because Republicans put forth a Farm Bill that cements the $187B in cuts to SNAP, gives a blanket liability shield to large pesticide corporations, rolls back critical environmental conservation programs and does nothing to address destabilizing”.
Hayes was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1973 and currently resides in Wolcott. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Southern Connecticut State University in 2005. Her tenure in Congress began after succeeding Elizabeth Esty in 2019 as representative for Connecticut’s 5th District.
