Jahana Hayes, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Connecticut’s 5th District since 2019, shared her thoughts on various topics through a series of tweets on May 8, 2025. Hayes, who succeeded Elizabeth Esty and holds a degree from Southern Connecticut State University, frequently uses social media to communicate with her constituents.
On May 8, 2025, Hayes expressed gratitude towards former congresswoman Gabby Giffords for providing encouragement during challenging times. She stated “There are days when this job is really hard and you feel defeated- but you run into a friend who provides encouragement, reminds you of your why and offers a positive outlook. Thanks @GabbyGiffords for always being a light, even on the darkest days “.
Later that day, Hayes addressed concerns regarding the staffing reduction at the Health and Human Services (HHS) department affecting the 988 Crisis Hotline. She noted “The 988 Crisis Hotline is for everyone. Whether you are facing mental health struggles or just need someone to talk to, counselors are there to help. I joined 34 @HouseDemocrats in demanding answers on the staffing reduction at @HHSGov & how agency reorganization could negatively”.
In another tweet on May 8, she commented on an Education & Workforce Committee hearing focused on antisemitism. She remarked “Yesterday, the Education & Workforce Committee held an 8th hearing on antisemitism. Republicans continue to politicize this pain and discrimination endured by so many students, but do nothing to truly make campuses safer & protect all students.”
Hayes was born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1973 and currently resides in Wolcott.
