Jahana Hayes, a U.S. Congress member representing Connecticut’s 5th district, shared her concerns about proposed legislation affecting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) on May 14, 2025. Her comments on social media address the potential impact of the bill and express her opposition to certain Republican proposals.
In a tweet posted at 17:34 UTC, Hayes criticized a bill that proposes cutting $313 billion from SNAP while Republicans assert that it will not affect benefits. She stated, “Although this bill cuts $313B from SNAP Republicans claim their legislation will not cut benefits. My amendment simply says – this bill cannot cut SNAP benefits or decrease eligibility & participation. Should be real easy for them to support- let’s see how they vote.”
Later, at 18:05 UTC, Hayes alluded to perceived ignorance among some lawmakers regarding the agricultural reconciliation bill’s content by quoting an adage in her post: “There is no so blind as he who will not see…… Full text of the Ag reconciliation bill:” and provided a link to the document.
Finally, at 19:17 UTC, Hayes expressed her opposition to a Republican proposal she believes would create obstacles for families with children over seven years old in accessing SNAP benefits. She tweeted, “I am against the Republican proposal to make it harder for families with children over 7 to access #SNAP. We should be helping feed kids, not imposing more barriers.”
Jahana Hayes has been serving in Congress since replacing Elizabeth Esty in 2019 and continues to represent Connecticut’s 5th District. Born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1973 and currently residing in Wolcott, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Connecticut State University in 2005.
