Jahana Hayes, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Connecticut’s 5th district since 2019, shared several thoughts on social media concerning education and food security. Known for her dedication to these issues, Hayes has been active in discussing policies that affect children and families.
On May 6, 2025, Jahana Hayes expressed gratitude towards educators by stating, “With love and appreciation to all my colleagues and friends who chose teaching as a profession. Thank you for everything you do and for putting students first. Happy Teacher Appreciation Day!” This message highlights her appreciation for the teaching profession.
The following day, on May 7, 2025, she emphasized the importance of food security for students by advocating for the Stop Child Hunger Act. In her words: “Many students rely on school for consistent hot meals. By making Summer EBT permanent & nationwide, the Stop Child Hunger Act is crucial for working to end child hunger.” This underscores her support for measures aimed at reducing child hunger through sustained food programs.
Later that same day, she criticized proposed budget cuts under President Trump’s administration: “The budget released by President Trump would slash SNAP & programs that children, seniors, veterans and families rely on. While Republicans delay hearings & debate internally @HouseAgDems will continue to work on behalf of those neglected by this administration.” This statement reflects her concern over potential reductions in essential assistance programs like SNAP.
Born in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1973 and currently residing in Wolcott, Jahana Hayes graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a BA in 2005. She succeeded Elizabeth Esty as the representative of Connecticut’s 5th District.
